    Suggestion:

Hey can some mod start a thread for "free s/w; goodies; whatever" sites?

Like this sysinternals site has bunch of handy stuff, i can't add all of those here..

So if some mod/staff mem takes responsiblity of maintaining that thread, it will be nice

    eg:
    http://www.sysinternals.com
    http://freshmeat.net
    http://www.freewarehome.com
    http://www.freewarefiles.com
    http://www.nonags.com
    http://www.ibiblio.org
    http://somesiteforfreegames
    http://somesiteforfreeringtones

    etc..

we can have diff. sections too.. like windows; linux; etc etc..

    Audio tools
    Real alternative
    http://www.pctip.ch/library/download...realalt111.exe
You do need a player that is capable of playing RealMedia. The included Media Player Classic supports it and works very well. Supported: RealAudio (.ra .rpm), RealMedia (.rm .ram .rmvb .rpx .smi .smil), RealText (.rt), ReadPix (.rp), RealMedia embedded in webpages. .smi and .smil files sometimes only play the first part of a clip. This is a limitation of the current Media Player Classic. The RealMedia Browser plugin supports Internet Explorer, Opera, Netscape and Mozilla.

    Zip Genius
    http://www.zipgenius5.tk/
ZipGenius is a zip tool suite that has all the functions of a typical compression utility plus a ton of extra features. It not only zips and unzips but also offers support for 21 compression and encoding/decoding formats, zip encyrption/decryption, PocketPC support via ActiveSync, drag-and-drop support, integration in Windows shell, sending archive via e-mail, and Web publishing of archives and files via FTP and TWAIN devices support.

ThumbsUp FOR ADVANCED USERS ONLY: Who want to go in depth into the working of their systems

I came across this good freeware utility - PageDefrag

    Introduction

One of the limitations of the Windows NT/2000 defragmentation interface is that it is not possible to defragment files that are open for exclusive access. Thus, standard defragmentation programs can neither show you how fragmented your paging files or Registry hives are, nor defragment them. Paging and Registry file fragmentation can be one of the leading causes of performance degradation related to file fragmentation in a system.

PageDefrag uses advanced techniques to provide you what commercial defragmenters cannot: the ability for you to see how fragmented your paging files and Registry hives are, and to defragment them. In addition, it defragments event log files and Windows 2000/XP hibernation files (where system memory is saved when you hibernate a laptop).

PageDefrag works on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Server 2003.
You can get this here --> http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/fr...gedefrag.shtml

In fact the site www.sysinternals.com has many such (mostly open source) freeware utilities (developed by them) which can help you with the internal workings with your OS (be it windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP/2003 as well as Linux). Here are some snippets -

    Process Explorer v8.4
Find out what files, registry keys and other objects processes have open, which DLLs they have loaded, and more. This uniquely powerful utility will even show you who owns each process.
    ListDLLs v2.23
List all the DLLs that are currently loaded, including where they are loaded and their version numbers. Version 2.0 prints the full path names of loaded modules.
    Regmon v6.1
This monitoring tool lets you see all Registry activity in real-time. It works on all versions of WinNT/2K, Windows 9x/Me and Windows 64-bit.
    Ctrl2cap v2.0
This is a kernel-mode driver that demonstrates keyboard input filtering just above the keyboard class driver in order to turn caps-locks into control keys. Filtering at this level allows conversion and hiding of keys before NT even "sees" them. Full source is included. Ctrl2cap also shows how to use NtDisplayString() to print messages to the initialization blue-screen.
I think that should be enough for the software gurus to start licking their lips!

    PS:
Disclaimer : Please note that the above mentioned utilities are meant for advanced users only. If you cant understand what the utility is meant for, please dont try them. Further, I have no connection with that site, I simply want to share info. And If anybody has already posted about these utilities before, my apologies for missing that post.
