How to remove sounds of Instruments from a Music file using Audacity.

I have this mp3 file with me. This song has many instruments used to create the music. I want to separate the vocals from the music using Audacity. The song is old, so finding its vocal version is difficult and I need to create it. Can somebody help me with it?

You can try doing what you desire by using Voice Trap Plug-in for Audacity. Using this plug-in, you can take out the vocal track out of the stereo track by subtracting left channel from the Right Channel. Voice Trap comes with 2 DSP algorithms in it. Using it, one can achieve, FFT based channel isolation or suppression. It also supports Cepstral Liftering. With this plug-in the bass intensity remains stable while the output is stereo.

There is software by name ‘Extra Boy’ which is specifically designed to isolate the vocals from an Audio files. It provides high quality voice filtration with maximum level of stereo preservation. It has spectral based vocal remover which utilizes ‘Stereolize’ algorithm for correction process. It also has Spatial based vocal remover which utilizes ‘Spreadilate’ algorithm for vocal processing. You can also combine the 2 modes according to your need. All parameters can be fully automated.

There is another plug-in by name ‘Knockout’ available for vocal isolation for Audacity. The main feature of this plug-in is that it takes 2 mono inputs and spectrally subtracts one from another. It can also retrieve centre-panned material from stereo input. In this plug in the instrumental frequency spectrum is eliminated through left channel. This plug-in doesn’t use ‘phase-cancel’ process, so you don’t need perfectly matched audio files.

I too use Knockout Plug-in for vocal isolation in Audio files. It returns the difference between the audio files you choose to be the inputs. If you use the ‘extract centre’ function, you can subtract the R input amplitude from L. Then you can spectral subtract output of L channel from original Audio. This process leaves centre stereo image on L channel. It actually blurs the R channel input so that the signal in one input frequency bands spread to the other frequency bands near it.

If you are unable to isolate vocals using Audacity, you can try another software called ‘Blue Cat Widening Gain’. It is more sophisticated to use than Audacity but the end results given are better than Audacity. It uses FFT technique for filtering of mid and side components of a stereo audio. It preserves the quality of stereo that it works upon. Mp3 encoding makes vocal isolation processes more complicated as it messes up with the stereo image.

I am a user of Blue Cat Widening Gain and it is better than Audacity for purpose of vocal isolation. It supports MIDI control capabilities. Using the MIDI control one can remotely control and automate the gain of each channel of audio signal. It supports native DSP code for optimal performance. It supports almost every sample rate.

The process of vocal isolation becomes simpler if the instrumental version of the same song is available. You can load the original audio track in Audacity and then import the instrumental version in Audacity. Now apply the invert effect on the instrumental version. After this, go to the wave editor where you will see a positive peak along with the negative peak. Now using Phase Cancellation function one can cancel the music channels from original audio file that are similar to the instrumental file’s channels.

Isolating music from an audio file without preserving vocals is an easy task to perform in Audacity. So you can separate the instrumental music from original file and use it to cancel the music during extraction of vocals from an audio file. This will result in more accurate vocal isolation and will consume lesser time. But this process can’t be used on audio files in mono format. It is because in stereo, the lead vocals are centre panned which is not the case in mono.
