embedded excel tables wont work when protecting form in word 2007

I have created a fillable form in word 2007 with embedded excel tables. If I protect the form, my tables won't work. But I need to protect the document for tabbing to work. Is there a workaround? I will be willing to send people a draft copy of the form.

Either display the Forms toolbar and click the "lock" icon to turn it off; or click the menu item Tools > Unprotect Document. If a password was applied to lock the form and you don't have the password. Or you can also first go to Office Button > Word Options and check the box for "Show Developer tab in the Ribbon". Now click the Developer tab, and you'll find the Protect Document button on it.

I know how to protect the document. What I want to know is if I can protect it and still have my embedded excel tables work (the tables have if statements in them).
