Before doing any risky task on the system, just remember one thing that VideoLan player not been do any Windows Explorer previews task. This is completely related to the windows based issue. Actually, this preview is locked to extension of the file type. Hence, those video files have the vlc file extension is not related to the VLC or any other type of player such as Windows Media Player. Hence this is happen in the system.

As we know that the VLC player is an codec-free software. Also one important thing is that the VLC software can build the previews of AVI files in the system. Hence this will be possibility that the files you mentioned is being not related to the avi file. This is the different files and hence this will be gives the different thumbnail or not giving any icon. Hence this is the main reason and it indicates that this files are not related to the VLC player.

It might be possible that the contained files have to be corrupted and hence this will be gives the different file thumbnail. Hence you need to download and then install the suitable antivirus onto the system if it is not present. Then scan the whole system using this authorized copy of the antivirus. This will be avoiding such crashing video files. In the result, this vlc file will be shows the correct thumbnail. Then use this technique and it solves your problem.

It could also possible that the file have not to be related to the vlc player. Hence this will not show the vlc thumbnail icon. If this is the vlc compatible video file, then you need to use the open with option which is show menu when right click on the file icon. Then open this files on vlc player using the open with option. This will be change the thumbnail icon of the required files. In the result, it will be capable to open in vlc player by double click on it.

Yes, this is the best thing that to identify that this will be compatible with the vlc player or not. You can easily do this task as per the process mentioned in the above post. The alternative way is also present to do this task. Check the compatibility tab of the vlc player and select the required extension files of the vlc player. This process is being also work to do this task. Hence, I hope you got some good suggestion to do this task.
