Importing XLS data into MS Project

I'm trying to import a excel spreadsheet into project. Only need to import a few columns. Here's my problem. The first column in the xls is level 1, column 2 is level 2, column 3 is task name, column 4 is duration. Example:

PHASE Work Sub-Task Duration
PHASE 1 Clocking USB0 5
PHASE 1 Clocking USB1 2
PHASE 2 Bring up power on 3


The import wants this turned into rows..
LEVEL NAME DURATION
1 Phase 1
2 Clocking
3 USB0 5

Anyone know how to accomplish this?

You can follow the below method:

1. Open a project file
2. Export and create a map for the fields you want to import later on.
3. Save the map
4. Open a new project
5. Use the map you just created
6. Use the file that has your data

I don't often use maps for importing and, when I do, I've found that creating an export map that matches what I really want to import is a good first step.

That helps if you are starting but not my specific issue. I need to flatten the spreadsheet somehow.

Any ideas on how to do that?
