What is Musical Instrument Digital Interface

Hi,
Today there are various sound formats used widely to transfer and generate audio files. But my interest lies with MIDI. It is the most compatible and widely used file format. I need some more information on the same. It is now there are variety of formats but still in some of my applications this sound format is the most supported one. I need an entire overview of this sound technology. Thanks in advance.

When you press a note, it transmits MIDI information which channel is being used, what note was struck, and how strongly (MIDI velocity).
