I think you have downloaded the wrong version of Avira Antivir , may be x64 version. i don't have ideas about Avira Antivir , best is go for AVG, its free and will never make you pc slow like other antivirus programs.

Sounds like either your file associations are borked, or you have a bagle infection. Often the safest solution is to reinstall Windows clean, not repair, bagle does a great amount of damage to the system. Here is a special scan to find out if it is really bagle. In this case reinstalling the OS will be the only safe solution, bagle does a great amount of damage to the system Here is a special scan to find out if it is really bagle.

    Blacklight scan Blacklight scan

    • Download F-Secure Blacklight and save it into a new folder C:\program files\blacklight .
    • Now launch fsbl.exe and close all other programs.
    • Click on "I accept the agreement" ->"next"-> "Scan".
    • After the scan is finished close choose "Close".
    • The log will be fsbl-XXX.log in the blacklight folder, in place of XXX there will be some numbers with date and time of the scan. Post its contents.

Scan your pc with some other security software, perform a full scan but first install updates for the antivirus you'll choose to perform a scan , Try a online scan at Eset , its good. I did once. But still your problem persist then sorry to say but the clean install would be the best solution, this really safest and best option.
