weird duration display

Hi, I've just bought project and I'm loving it except as I enter tasks and then enter the dates and the task has a one or two day duration it starts in the middle of the day and actually spans three days and as my project goes on all my times are out of whack. i am sure its something I have over looked but could some one please help me.
