Have you created the file? If not, it is possible that the person was using a plugin that does not have. Most plugin makers have properly encoded to allow you still open files, but some do not.
If you have InDesign CS 2 and want to open a file. Inx, you do not need a plug-in, but you must have the correct version of CS. It is necessary to 3.0.1 compatibility update in with CS2. If you do not know : hold down the Command key (on Mac, Ctrl on PC) and select About InDesign InDesign menu. The full version is: (838 CS 3.0.1). If you do not have the (838), download the Adobe compatibility update. Hope that helps ...
There are 2 ways to open file in Indesign :
1. To open documents that were created in a later version of InDesign, upgrade to that version. (For example, to open InDesign CS2 documents in InDesign CS, upgrade to InDesign CS2.) You can purchase upgrades from Adobe Authorized Resellers and from Adobe directly.
2. To open the document in InDesign CS, you must first export the document from InDesign CS2 as an InDesign Interchange (.inx) file. Features that are specific to InDesign CS2 (for example, footnotes and object styles) may be modified or omitted when you open the INX file in InDesign CS.
