The Microsoft Compression Client Pack 1.0 for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 is provided by the Microsoft it self, may be you got it via windows update. It contains the Msdelta.dll file. The Msdelta.dll file is a library that is part of the Windows Vista operating system. The Msdelta.dll file exports functionality to create and apply binary deltas. These deltas are used to efficiently download updates for Windows Vista. This advanced compression technology is also suitable for many other differential compression scenarios. MSDelta is the next generation of the PatchAPI compression technology that was included in earlier version of the Windows operating system. MSDelta typically produces smaller deltas than PatchAPI.

The DLL file i.e msdelta.dll comes with this Microsoft compression client pack is part of Windows Vista and used by Windows Update. And its not necessary or a optional program for Xp. And the msdelta.dll file can also be used by the other programs on other versions of Windows. Therefore, this component may have been installed as a part of some other program on your system. So you probably you shouldn't remove that component, as doing so would be likely to make improper function of program which is using this.

The Microsoft compression client pack is not a necessity but it's nice to have. It enables you according to Microsoft to make binary deltas of the compressed files . Delta Compression is a differential compression technology developed by Microsoft. While it has mainly been used for Windows Updates, Delta Compression offers other uses as well.

Installed OS (XP Home), programs, files, etc. to NEW hard drive. Previously had Windows Defender on old drive but download wizard failed to transfer Windows Defender. Downloaded Windows Defender on New drive (from Microsoft download center) & after going thru the download process message says 'must remove Microsoft Compression Client to complete WD download'.
If I remove Compression Client will it adversly effect other programs & can compression client be Reinstalled 'separately' ??
    Thank you.

    Re: Microsoft compression client pack

Thank you for your fast reply.
Several people & Microsoft site refer to Compression Client 1.0 as a file used by Vista & is 'optional' for XP & probably installed as a downloaded 'updated'.
Would like to keep it installed BUT I also want to reinstall Microsoft Windows Defender & the download will NOT install unless Compression Client is first removed.
If CC 1.0 is removed to install Windows Defender, couldn't it be RE-installed by a download or wouldn't it be re-installed as an automatic update anyway if it is a needed file for XP??
Interested in your (or anyone else's) reply.
    Thanks again.

    Re: Microsoft compression client pack

    Hi bbones,

I guess that the Microsoft compression client pack auto-installed whenever Windows Updates/Microsoft Updates are installed through http://update.microsoft.com in XP and Server 2003. It's supposed to make downloaded update files smaller. So you can try to uninstall it to install Windows defender and then can reinstall it whenever you want or if you do a windows update it will automatically install.
