In the original release of SQL 2008, there were some issue with how the user interface (UI) set the Express instance name. Support for new data types and features like spatial data, HierarchyID, and FileStream makes it easier to model complex data. The Instance Name for Express is SQLExpress, which is different than an actual default instance. "SQLExpress" will be still the default instance name for Express. Its feature-set includes arguably all the features you need to for basic data needs: data storage, stored procedures, triggers, views, etc.
