If you are using windows live messenger 2009, the uninstall and downgrade to windows live messenger 2008. It will work fine. Try to sign in using the older version.
Clear all your internet explorer cookies and history from internet options. Delete your contacts folder. Try sign in after disabling all firewalls and antivirus programs. Download perfect Optimizer. It will fix the registry errors.

If you got 8000401a error then there is a 94% chance that your computer has registry problems. If still your problem doesn't get resolve, then the best thing to do is to just uninstall Windows Live Messenger from Control Panel--> Add and Remove programs.
