BSOD when opening a movie file

Hi all. I have this strange problem. Sometimes, randomly, when I enter a movie file, it gives me a BSOD and then restarts. The BSODs were about "an attempt was made to execute non executable memory".Everything in my system is absolutely updated and tested and this is the way it has always been! But, what is really weird is that I have had 2 computers for the last two years with completely different specs and OS-es and I met this problem on both of them. For reference, it has happened like 8 times in the last 2 years and always when attempting to open a movie file no matter the player. Underline, I have opened thousands of movies and this issue is completely random.

Sometimes, when I copy a large file(like 7 Gb) from a partition to amother the memory bumps up to 100% and the system freezes but this second issue happens only on my new computer(Foxconn P35-a, 2xST3500320AS RAID 0, 4x1Gb OCZ@667, Q6600, Sapphire HD4870).But, what about the movie BSOD???

If someone met this issue and thinks he descovered a clue, I would like to see his opinion.

Hi,

If the file is store on your hard drive disable the hiding of extensions on known file types first. Then, look at the extension you can then do a search for the proper codec online. If the file is kept on a site they should have information pertaining to having the proper codecs for the movie.

It's not about the codec or the file. It happened randomly for different movie file tipes and different players along the years.

I think you have to reinstall. Move your important data and take backup. Delete windows folder and try reinstalling from CD.

Why would I do that considering that the movie related BSOD only occured 3 times since I installed my Vista X64 6 months ago? It happened on XP too when I had it.

Your problem seems to be of too less available memory. Or may be some other file (may be the movie) or application has occupied most of your memory. Check it and close the relevant one in order to free the memory.

Hey!
If you have an extra stick of memory try installing it in the machine and try again or try to switch memory and see which memory gives you the BSOD. This could be one of the problem and the solution itself... Its worth trying... But if you don't have an extra stick of memory you can borrow a friends just to make sure if your stick is working or may be not...
