Re: Retrieve Windows picture and fax viewer

The Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is set as the default image viewer for all sorts of file types in Windows XP. Unfortunately, choosing a new program as the default in the File Types window won't change this, and there's no option in the Windows interface that can disable this component. Take a Registry change to fix it:

    Solution 1:

    • Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
    • Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ SystemFileAssociations\ image\ ShellEx\ ContextMenuHandlers.
    • Delete the ShellImagePreview key.
    • Close the Registry Editor when you're done; the change will take effect immediately.

    Solution 2:
    • Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
    • Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ CLSID\ {e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}\ shellex.
    • Delete the MayChangeDefaultMenu key.
    • Close the Registry Editor when you're done; the change will take effect immediately.

Well, the solution is simple. Open the Command Prompt (Run > cmd) and type the below lines and things will start to work fine.

    regsvr32 /i %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll

This possibly re installs the dll associated with the Picture and Fax viewer.

Re: Retrieve Windows picture and fax viewer

This is because the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer itself is a DLL file rather than a EXE. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer can't be selected using the browse dialog from Mozilla Firefox. Only option is to set Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as the default viewer in Windows, so that it's listed automatically in the Mozilla Firefox Browse dialog. You may try fixing the JPG association using one of the fixes:

    • Repair image file type associations in Windows XP
    • File association fixes

Re: Retrieve Windows picture and fax viewer

Windows XP features embedded Picture & Fax Viewer for quick viewing of your images, However, the handy utility only supports common popular image formats like JPEG, GIF, and BMP making it necessary to install other multi-format image viewers like ACDSee or XnView, but not anymore free Windows Utility ImageXtender let you hack Windows XP standard Picture & Fax Viewer to support more then 200 known graphics extensions.

You just need to install ImageXtender and it patches the default viewer to support the new image formats, the process of viewing images would remain the same allowing you to view all image formats in three different viewing modes - Preview, Thumbnails and Filmstrip.
