Necessary to download a converter for transferring moviefiles?

My cousin gifted me the Sandisk Sansa Fuze and I want to put videos from youtube on it. He said that I need to download a converter(file converter I'm guessing).
Can I directly view the videos simply by transferrering them?
Or I have to compulsory download the converter?

If your new device supports all the file formats, then it might work very well
by simply transferring them.
But most of the time these hardware devices does not support higher file formats, so better download and install a converter in order to avoid any inconvenience...
