Unable to Start .exe program file

hi When i am try to launch an application , the following error message appears and the program does not run. "windows cannot open this file,make sure you typed the name correctly and try again". this appears mostly for each application as i try to double click and run the program.i am using windows xp sp2 is there need to install latest service pack please tell me why this happening to me.please help me.

This problem occurs due to the .exe file association in the registry is corrupt. This behavior is generally caused by viruses which modifies the .exe file association in registry.so can your computer for virus detection use latest updated antivirus.

you can solve this problem using Registry editor

• go to Start >Run > type Command
• Type the following commands one by one:
  
  

  cd\windows
  regedit

• Registry Editor opens, then navigate to the following key:
  

• HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile \ shell \ open \ command

• Double-click the (Default) value in the right pane
• Delete the current value data, and then type:
  
  "%1" %*
• Navigate to:
  

  HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe

• In the right-pane, set (default) to exefile
• Exit the Registry Editor.
