The free virtualization solution from Sun, has just passed version 2.1.0. VirtualBox memorandum is the result of the acquisition of German publisher Innotek by Sun, and allows the user to operate on the same computer or server operating systems: a "host" physically installed, and "Guests" in the form of virtual machines. VirtualBox runs Solaris OS, OpenSolaris, Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
On the menu this version 2.1.0, the main novelty will probably care, experimental, 64-bit systems virtualized guests on 32-bit systems, and management, is still experimental, the OpenGL 3D.
Sun also said support for hardware virtualization technologies integrated with Intel or AMD on the hosts with Mac OS X, a new engine NAT, and a network interface implementations for Windows and Linux rethought. Is also planned support for hard disk imaging formats WMDK (VMWare format) or HDV (Microsoft), so as to improve compatibility with VirtualBox virtualization solutions of these two competitors.
VirtualBox can be downloaded for free from Sun's site. An open source edition, distributed under GPL v2, but deprived of some advanced features, is also available. Finally, companies will be able to turn to the services provided by Sun for a support in a possible deployment in their park.
