    Locked for editing....very frustrated

I am getting very frustrated on this matter and I cannot seem to find a good
solution on any of the common forums (or googled).

I have a network setup running Server 2003 and 68 XP clients that has been
running flawless for 2 straight years (not even one single virus has
invaded). I setup a Gpo to "file relocate" the My Documents to a profiles
folder on the server. The server also has a few other shared folders for
common files and shared documents. Nothing special at all. The server does
    do DHCP and DNS.

One (and only one) of my clients is having a very difficult time with an
excel spreadsheet. When it is placed in the My Documents folder and they
reboot/logout, the file will synchronize normal but when they log in, the
file says: The xxx.xls file is locked for editing by user "Default". Open
as Read Only, Notify, Cancel. Now, the Default user it is referring too
seems to be itself because the User name in Excel is Default (as is every
    client in the building).

The kicker is when the document is placed on the desktop, it can be opened,
edited, saved perfectly fine. My solution for the time being is to obviously
keep it on the desktop but I like the fact that the My Documents folder is
backed up nightly so I want it in there.

Additionally, after this file starts coming up “Locked”, it cannot be moved,
deleted or renamed from the My Documents folder by the Client or Server.
When I try to delete the file from the Server, it says it is currently in use
but nothing shows up in the ‘Manage > Shared Folders > Open Files’ area. I
can delete using a program MoveOnBoot. I know for a fact, no other clients
have this file open because I have recreated it, moved it to My Documents,
rebooted, logged in and it immediately comes up locked by Default.

The thing that is really killing me is that NO other files, excel, word or
otherwise are doing this. Just this one particular file. I have recreated
this file numerous time for blank templates by copy/pasting the data from the
desktop one to the new one. I thought it might be file size somehow but this
file is only 3.5mb big and I have no troubles with files 12mb.

Is there anything I am missing or any program that can check the spreadsheet
for corruption? Could there be bad data that I copy/paste when I rebuild
this file? I am dying here guys, please help.

    Thank you,
    Jim

I may not be the best help but to me it sounds like some process or program
is opening this file without you knowing it. It has to be getting opened
somehow and something is referencing it to be opened from somewhere. Maybe
you should do audit logs on it via "object access" and check what user ,
service or account is opening it before you can get to it
