I have the same problem with printer going offline with Windows 2003
SP2 installed. I tested on 2 machines with W2003 SP2 installed and on
both, my Xerox Phaser 8500 printer goes Offline within 10 seconds of
    restarting the print spooler.

On W2003 machines without SP2 installed, the same printer is working
    normally.
Strangely, other printers - HP, Ricoh, Lexmark etc, on the W2003 SP2
or non-SP2 machines are also working properly.

I found out from MS Support that apparent SP2 has some changes in the
way SNMP is handling printer queues.
It now does multiple SNMP threads for the printer queues instead of 1
    round robin.
To resolve this, check if your printer's SNMP is working properly.
To workaround, in the Printers and Faxes folder, File > Server
    Properties
Goto Ports Tab > Click the offline Port > Configure Port
    Uncheck "SNMP Status Enable"
    OK

This will turn off SNMP querying and set the printer to always Online.

    XEROX Document Center

I have had the smae problem with a XEROX Document Center and unchecking "SNMP Status Enable" appears to have worked for me also.

    Thanks for the solution!!!

    Thanks...

Hi and thanks for this article.

I had the same problem with a Xerox Workcentre Pro 255. My 2 olders Xerox were fine. My 65 others brands printers had no problem at all.

    Thanks again...

Problem with Canon 1023N and Windows 2003 SP2

Disabling the SNMP Status Enabled check box also did the trick for us...

Has anyone found a real "solution" for this? The "uncheck SNMP"
workaround did the trick, but I use a network management application
that queries our printers' SNMP at regular intervals. I would like to
get this back up and running...

Thank you for the solution...I was having the exact same issues.

We went to LPR printing and haven't had any problems. With TCPIP we would get queues that would lock up infrequently. With LPR they were bullet proof.

With the workaround you only disable SNMP at the print server, not at
the printer itself. You can still query the printer directly. But I
agree that there should be a proper solution to this.

I had a such problem, I'm replacing an old Win2003 SP2 server by a new one.
Some printers where offline on the new one, online on the old one, and the
physical devices where online too. I unchecked the "SNMP Status Enable", then
    all printers went online :-)
