Problem: Windows warning message, Can't find local profile and logging on to temporary profile

I have an emergency with my computer!
I just turned My IBM laptop on and when I logged on to my user account,
it gave me a warning message, something like, "your local profile can't
be updated (or located)," and now when it opens my Windows account,
none of my existing stuff shows up, nothing that's saved shows up (and
there are thousands of documents, many not copied anywhere in their
final form). It's like working with a brand new computer, with
original settings. Is all this stuff still there somewhere, and how
can I retrieve it? What should I do? I'm having a total panic attack
over this, so I'd really appreciate your help.

This sounds like you are logging onto a domain and your account is set
up to use "roaming profiles". The way this works is your profile (which
has all your desktop configuration) is stored on a server instead of
your local machine. When you log on, the profile is copied from the
server to your machine. The message is saying that it can't locate the
server and/or the profile.

You need to call your tech support/LAN administrator.

It's a personal computer, not linked to any networks. I don't think it
was set up at all to use roaming profiles.

something corupted your profile. This makes windows create a new one
for you . If you open up my computer / c drive / documents and settings
there should be 2 profiles with your name. one might be name.bak or
name.domain or just name. I assume you are not on a domain so it should
be name and name.bak . if you click on name.bak it should show all your
files from old profile you can copy these to your new profile and your
all set. Also i would run some cleanup utilities and scan disk etc to
make sure your pc is clean of spyware and no hard drive errors
