ntbackup fails with insufficient memory error 8017

Hi, I have been having problems with Windows Server 2003's ntbackup
program. I have tried every group and microsoft site I can find to
solve the problem but to no avail.

I am basically trying to do a daily backup to a set of 4mm DDS4 tapes.
I don't want it to care what is ont he tapes already, but write over
    them nightly.

My server is a Dell Poweredge 2600 with 512MB Ram, 36GB HD (Raid5) with
a PVT100 DDS4 Tape drive running Windows 2003. It is up to date with
all the Windows Updates (as of 22/3/5). I also intalled Microsoft's
828402 hotfix, which made no difference.

The tapes are less than 6 months old, the tape drive has been cleaned
using the provided head cleaner :-

My backup script is as follows:-

    start /wait rsm.exe refresh /lf"4mm dds"
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\Documents and
    Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application
    Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\bccnbackup.bks" /d "Set created
    10/03/2005 at 15:43" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:on /m normal /j
    "bccnbackup" /l:f /p "4mm DDS" /um

This works usually when the tape is free, but produces this log when it
has already been used and is in the 4mm DDS pool:-

    Backup log:-
    ==================================================
    Backup Status
    Operation: Backup
    Active backup destination: 4mm DDS
Media name: "Media created 22/03/2005 at 11:52"

    Error: Insufficient memory available.
    The operation was ended.
Backup completed on 22/03/2005 at 11:53.
    Directories: 0
    Files: 0
    Bytes: 0
    Time: 1 second

Error: C: is not a valid drive, or you do not have access.

    ----------------------

The operation did not successfully complete.

    ==========================================================

In Event viewer I have error 8017, 8001, 8019. As I mentioned earlier,
I installed the recommended hotfix 828402, but this did nothing. I also
upgraded my tape drive's driver and firmware.

The strange thing is, the backup seems to work when the media is
allocated as 'free'. Now my understanding is that the /um switch is
supposed to tell the program to use any media in the drive.

I've seen many posts with these errors, but no real solutions, please
    help!!!!

See tip 5961 and lin in the 'Tips & Tricks' at http://www.jsiinc.com to
deallocate the mounted tape just after the refresh.

You could also write a free media label after the deallocate, though that should no be necessary.
    RSM freemedia /PF:%media%

I believe I also saw this error before I applied 817688.

RSM permissions can cause this error message

Check the Security permissions on the Media Pools in Removealble Storage. Make sure that the account used for backup job has apprpriate permissions to the backup media pool.

    Thanks

I just started getting the same message on a job that's been running for well
over a year with the same account and the privileges on the account haven't
been changed. Can anyone tell me why my job stopped working all of a sudden.

In my case, the cause of this problem was the driver of HP LTO Ultrium.
I used HP driver version 1.4.0.0 and 1.0.5.2.
These drivers failed to activate RSM.

I changed the driver to MS version 5.2.3790.0,after that it was fixed.
This driver is in the installation cd of Windows 2003 standard.
