How to extend C drive on Windows 2003 Server

My C drive is running low on space on my 2003 server. The HD has 55GB free.
I tried using DISKPART to try and extend the C drive from 12GB to 30GB, but
I get an error that the volume may not be extended. Other than 3rd party
software like Server Magic, is there a way to extend the System partition?

On the Windows Server 2003 family of operating systems, simple volumes can
be extended unless they are system partitions, boot partitions, or simple
volumes that were formerly partitions on basic disks that were converted to
    dynamic using Windows 2000.

Is C: your system and/or boot partition?

I would suspect it is both system and boot. As such only server magic
    can expand.

Highly recommend you consider Ghosting the present disk to a new one.
You can resize the c: partition by doing a partition to partition
    ghost.

This is less expensive then the server magic version and a safer
operation to do. I hightly recommend that if you go the server magic
route that you backup d: and then delete it. Expand into raw space
works almost all the time. Trying to shrink d: to provide space to
expand c: can fail trashing the entire drive.

It is strange that the first response of the people here is related to dynamic disk, is it because "volume"? Neither diskpart nor Disk management can solve the problem

I saw this question many times. Partition magic doesn't compatible with server 2003, try partition magic alternative it works well on servers

I would honestly suggest to reinstall the operating system with the larger
drive or partition size and not use any type of third party tool to extend a
volume or partition. I've seen too many issues in the past with more than
one customer trying these tools that resulted in reinstalling the operating
    system anyway to fix it.

It is not a good idea for a server to reinstall, but backup before any
operate is useful. Resize the partition directly will reduce much
downtime. See this 'how to extend server 2003 article'

It is may not so convenient to reinstall a server. You can use the 3rd party
software like easeus partition master to resize your partition. Before starting to enlarge c drive, remove the unallocated space to the end of C by software.
    Hope it would be helpful.

Diskpart is not a good tool to extend the system partition, there must be unallocated behind it. As far as I know, you cannot extend the system partition with diskpart command line.
partition magic server is much better, easy to use and extend c drive without rebooting.

i had tired the partition magic, but it didn't update for a long time. it may not be so suitable for my new os. but the latest partition master by easeus had helped me extend my drive. i remember i had followed the steps on this page

As this thread quiet for a while, I wonder if you have solved your problem. Assuming you have fixed, in case of who have the same problem. I think there is a better solution with step by step tutorial. I hope it will be helpful.

How to Extend System Partition C Drive on Windows Server:

The Reason Why Get Error When Using Diskpart:

Extension merely supports data volumes. It prohibits boot or system partition from being extended. That's the reason why the diskpart failed to extend the volume. And the partition where the system page file is stored is unavailable to extend unless the page file is moved to a partition which you would not like to extend.

I was just hunting for this same problem.

Looking through it seems the way to extend the system partition on Win2003 is to boot into a WinPE system, then you can extend the system partition just like you would a data partition, since windows is not actually running from the system once booted into WinPE.
