Windows Server 2003 hangs on "applying computer settings"

    Any help with the above?

After browsing around this seems a common problem with no simple solution.

Safe mode allows me access to the desktop.

Not being a server os user/admin etc Im unsure of the steps needed to begin
troubleshooting this - it just got dropped on me.

What additional info can I provide to you that may help?

    Any and all help appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

    Is this computer domain controller?
If it is domain controller how is DNS setup? Is Antivirus running on this
    computer?

Are there any errors reported in event logs?

    Hi Gavin,
If you are using APC Powerchute ups software, go to safe mode and run
start->msconfig. Go to services tab and disable apc services, presumably,
apcpbe agent or server service. In case you do not have APC on your server,
do a clean boot and see if it works.

They are using Powerchute software - will try what you suggest and post
    again.

Thanks for the response - much appreciated.

Re: Windows Server 2003 hangs on "applying computer settings"

It is a standalone server on a network of around 20 pc's in one building.
Looking in the server setup wizard it has been asigned the role of File
Server, Domain Server (active directory) and DHCP - no other roles are
listed. How can I check on the DNS stuff?

McAfee Virus scan enterprise ver 7.0.0 is installed.

There are lots of errors listed in the event log - there are a bunch
regarding services not starting due to booting into safe mode.

I also see the following event id errors listed. (Listed in order from time
of first boot when problem occured.)

    event id 5781

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: NETLOGON
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 5781
    Date: 8-6-2005
    Time: 16:49:10
    User: N/A
    Computer: SERVERB
    Description:
Dynamic registration or deletion of one or more DNS records associated with
DNS domain 'DomainDnsZones.DOMAIN.LOCAL.' failed. These records are used by
other computers to locate this server as a domain controller (if the
specified domain is an Active Directory domain) or as an LDAP server (if the
specified domain is an application partition).

    Possible causes of failure include:
    - TCP/IP properties of the network connections of this computer contain
wrong IP address(es) of the preferred and alternate DNS servers
    - Specified preferred and alternate DNS servers are not running
    - DNS server(s) primary for the records to be registered is not running
    - Preferred or alternate DNS servers are configured with wrong root hints
    - Parent DNS zone contains incorrect delegation to the child zone
authoritative for the DNS records that failed registration

    event id 5513

    Source: NETLOGON
    Event ID: 5513

The computer "computer name" tried to connect to the server "server name"
using the trust relationship established by the "domain name" domain.
However, the computer lost the correct security identifier (SID) when the
domain was reconfgured. Reestablish the trust relationship.

    event id 35

NLB Cluster 0.0.0.0 Cluster mode cannot be enabled due to parameter errors.
All traffic will be passed through to TCP/IP. Restart cluster operations
after fixing the problem by running wlbs reload followed by wlbs start.

    event id 1041

The DHCP service is not servicing any clients because none of the active
network interfaces have statically configured IP
addresses or there are no active interfaces.

    Causes: 1. Bad NIC.
    2. Incorrect NIC hardware settings.
    3. Incorrect TCP/IP settings.

Hope those are of some use.

Many thanks for the help so far.

To keep you up to date.

I left the server booting overnight and have been able to log into it this
    morning.

When I right click on network properties or try and access network settings
in control panel nothing happens at all.

Ive set 2 apc ups services to start manually and now the server starts
    correctly.

However all ip's etc have vanished from network settings.

Should I just be able to replace those and all should be well or is there
more I can do or need to do to get the server back up and working correctly?

    Thanks again all

    Hi,

Did you configure the antivirus on this server like this (this server from
what you describe is domain controller).

Virus scanning recommendations on a Windows 2000 or on a Windows Server 2003
    domain controller
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;822158

    Can you run

    ipconfig /all

from command line? What are the settings that you get?

    Hi Mike,

Its looking like the problem was being caused by the APC services as
everything seems ok at the moment. Many thanks for your help and suggestions
    and also thanks to Lukesh.

    Hi, guys.

I have seen this same problem. If you check out the APC website, there
    is this document on there:

    http://emea-en.apc.com/cgi-bin/emea_...d=7202&p_olh=1

Basically, your server will go berzerk! If it's a file/print server,
you may even see a printer uninstall itself. People won't be able to
get into files/save all of a sudden. this will happen every few hours
or so. Weird errors pop up on people's screens....etc!!

If you're using version 6.x of APC Powerchute, download the upgrade to
7.0.4 to the server. Reboot in safe mode. Disable the APC service(s).
Reboot into normal mode. Install the update.

How you can tell if you're affected is by basically trying to
stop/start the APC Service. It will hang for ever!

    Hope this helps.

Re: Windows Server 2003 hangs on "applying computer settings"

Here's the Simple Solution. If your server booted correctly in the past, then the "Applying Computer Settings" may indicate a problem with Group Policy which is a problem with Active Directory communications which may be a DNS failure/delay problem. In one case I discovered that the Blackberry Enterprise Server's Dispatcher Service conflicts with Microsoft DNS service preventing DNS from starting in a timely manner. This causes all kinds of problems with Active Directory and the services that depen don it for authentication, etc. My solution was to boot into F8 Safe Mode and DISABLE all non-Microsoft Services (except the anti-virus), in particular all the Blackberry services. The server reboots very quickly and you're presented with CTRL+ALT+DEL login prompt. Then manually start the Blackberry Services in the following order: Router, Dispatcher, Controller. This is an issue that RIM knows about. Remember: If your SBS 2003 Server booted fine when it was freshly installed then something installed afterwards, like APC PowerChute, BES, Dell Open Manage, etc., must be the culprit but the challenge is figuring out the sequence of events. Good luck. Anthony Maw, B.Sc., CNA, MCSE, Vancouver, Canada.
