Server 2008 - Event 12293 (Software Licensing Service) Application Error

    Hi,

We have (4) 2008 64-bit Servers. Out of the 4, 2 of them are generating
    Event 12293.

    Type: Error
    Source: Software Licensing Service
    Event ID: 12293
    Event Time: 4/13/2009 5:37:58 PM
    User: n/a
    Computer: Backup.domain.int
    Description:
Event message could not be found, but contained these strings:
    hr=0x80072338, domain.int

Running slui.exe 0x2a 0x80072338 generates the following Windows Activation
    Error...

    DNS signature failed to verify.

From what reading I have done this seems to be related to KMS which we have
not setup and are not using at this moment in time. All servers are being
    activated using MAK.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this error? I'm tempted to disable the
Software Licensing Services (SLsvc.exe) but I don't know what other effects
    that could cause.

    Any information would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

RE: Server 2008 - Event 12293 (Software Licensing Service) Application Error

    Hello Steve,
typically we see that error code when the KMS host machine attempts to
register itself with the DNS server machines.
    Open an elevated CMD prompt.
    Run slmgr /dlv
What is on the description line of the machines generating these messages?
    Thanks,
    Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

I ran the command on all of our 2008 servers and the message is the same...

Description: Windows Operating System - Windows Server(R), VOLUME_KMS_B

Re: Server 2008 - Event 12293 (Software Licensing Service) Application Error

    Hello Steve,
All four of those machines were activated using the KMS host key not the
    MAK key.
That is why they are all trying to register with DNS, thus the event ID

    | >Description: Windows Operating System - Windows Server(R), VOLUME_KMS_B
    channel
Should be if you were using MAK keys:
Description: Windows Operating System - Windows Server(R), VOLUME_MAK_B
    channel

You should change the Product key to the MAK key and activate those
    machines.

    Thanks,
    Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
