When I try to start one of the windwos 2003 server sp2 this morning, I am
getting this error messgae.

Can someone help "following file is missing or corrupt
WINDOWS/SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"

how to do the recover or repair.

my backup is in that server itself.
If I don't have the backup, can I do the repair using the default windows
2003 cd ?

i found a system state backup file one month ago, is your the d:\ backup.bkf,

How can i restore it when i am in the recovery console prompt ?

You're playing a dangerous game with your server. Backing up the machine
only once every month is grossly inadequate and storing the backup files on
the server itself makes them close to useless.

After recovering from the current problem, using Meinolf Weber's links, you
should review your backup policy and note the following points:

- The interval between backups is a business decision. How would your
business be affected if it lost 3 days worth of data? Or 3 weeks?
- Backup media must be stored well away from the server. If the data is
critical for the business then it must be stored in a different building.
- You must alternate between at least two backup media. If you use a single
medium then you risk overwriting the only good copy of a backed up file with
a corrupted copy. Many people use five sets, one for each day of the week.
- You must perform a full test recovery of your backed up data right now. If
you don't then you will never know whether the process works - until it's
too late.
- You must perform a partial test recovery twice each year. If you don't
then you won't know that the process has failed until it's too late.
- You must create an automatic notify process that informs you regularly
(e.g. once a week) how the backup process went.

If you omit any of the above steps then you risk severe data loss.

You can choose to restore the system state to an alternate location. Then
use the system hive from your backup.

To start the Recovery Console, start the computer from the Windows 2003
Setup Disk. At the "Welcome to Setup" screen. Press F10 or R to repair a
Windows 2003 installation, and then press C to use the Recovery Console. The
Recovery Console then prompts you for the administrator password. If you do
not have the correct password, Recovery Console does not allow access to the
computer. If an incorrect password is entered three times, the Recovery
Console quits and restarts the computer. Note If the registry is corrupted
or missing or no valid installations are found, the Recovery Console starts
in the root of the startup volume without requiring a password. You cannot
access any folders, but you can carry out commands such as chkdsk, fixboot,
and fixmbr for limited disk repairs. Once the password has been validated,
you have full access to the Recovery Console, but limited access to the hard
disk. You can only access the following folders on your computer: drive
root, %systemroot% or %windir%

If you had a good backup I would have recommended booting to the recovery
console and running chkdsk as a first step. Without a good backup I wouldn't
try this as it could make things worse. The first thing you should do is
backup the server. I recommend you purchase a disk imaging program and
create an image of all the disks on the server before you do any more
troubleshooting. Every thing you do to try to fix the problem has the
potential to make it worse.

Hello,
Did you install SP2 on that machine or was this a slipstreamed installation?
If you installed SP2 separately I think it backs up the registry at that
time.
You would have *.sp registry files in the \Windows\system32\config folder.
These would be copies from when you installed the service pack.
If they exist, they could be used ( all of them need to be replaced at the
same time) to replace the existing registry files.
Then if boot back into the OS, you could restore the system state backup.

I'm glad that you got the system up.

Please note that it is very unlikely that chkdsk actually fixed a
corrupt file (short of finding linking errors) as it only works on file
systems, not the contents of files.

Also, considering that you had enough file system corruption to keep
your system from booting, I would strongly suggest that you run a 5
stage chkdsk with the following command:

chkdsk c: /f /r /x

/f = Fix errors on the disk.
/r = Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.
/x = Force the volume to dismount first if necessary.

How to fix Windows system32 config system is corrupt in Windows Server 2003

Resolution:

1. Insert your Windows Server 2003 CD and reboot from the CD drive

[To boot from CD, go to BIOS Setup option on startup and select your CD/DVD drive as the first boot drive, save the present settings and exit]

Your computer will reboot & will boot from Windows Server 2003

2. Press ‘R’ when offered the option of using the Windows Recovery Console

Recovery Console will prompt at the command prompt type the following:

C:\WINDOWS >cd system32\

this changes the current directory to C:\Windows\System32

ren config configold

This renames the config folder to configold

mkdir config

this makes a new directory called config

cd config

changes the current directory to c:\Windows\System32\Config

then type the following lines pressing enter after each one

copy c:\windows\repair\system

copy c:\windows\repair\software

copy c:\windows\repair\sam

copy c:\windows\repair\security

copy c:windows\repair\default

after each line it should say:

1 file copied

type: exit

Now Server will reboot

Hi Guys,

I have a DELL inspiron mini netbook. I was using Kaspersky antivirus on it. lately i uninstalled kaspersky.. after that it asked me to reboot the system and wen i did that i got this error

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I had to take back up from my system so i made slax bootable usb.. but when i tried restarting again ...the windows was running normally..now then again after 2 days i got the same error again..

Since netbooks don't have CD/DVD drive..can u tell wat must be wrong here.
