    Hello Imran,

Aside from some software engineering changes that make WINS less vulnerable
to malicious attack, WINS 2008 functionality has not changed from that available
    in Windows Server 2003.

You can try to run mixed environments with 32/64bit if you want but Windows Server 2008 R2 is only 64bit available. If you dont want to test the migration steps then you can run into some issues but profiles are independent from the DC upgrade or migration part. You can also take a look at this article to get more information: http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/archi...r-2008-r2.aspx

Check the Technet online article on How to Upgrade Domain Controllers to Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 on this url address - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...94(WS.10).aspx. Because you can run into the trouble of getting the Active Directory database corrupted, it is always recommended that you should better perform a full backup of Active Directory first. After that only proceed with the migration process.
