    Active Directory DC upgrading 2003-2008

We are looking at upgrading our Domain Controller from server 2003 to 2008 and was wondering what, if any are the downsides. I am looking for any hiccups, little things that wont work right, or anything that will change the way our Active Directory works

    Hello Kobskid,

Basically the upgrade is not a big task. Please describe a bit more your
    network setup:

Is it the only Domain controller?

Do you have multiple NIC's on the DC in use? Please post an uneidted ipconfig
    /all from the running DC.

Is it a SBS version from windows?

Do you run exchange or sql on the domain controller or anything else?

Do you have exchange or something else running in your domain?

Do you use a single label domain name like DOMAIN or is it DOMAIN.COM or
    equivalent?

An inplace upgrade is possible, but the from my point of view better way
is to add a new 2008 server to the domain and make it DNS/GC server. Then
move the 5 FSMO roles to the new server. For DNS use AD integrated zones,
if not done, so all zones will be replicated and are writeable. If everything
still run's correct you can demote the old DC to get it correct out of the
domain. But it is recommended to have at least 2 DC's in a domain.

    Best regards

Thank you for the quick response. I wish I could answer most of those questions. I am just the student worker tasked with the job of finding what will go wrong if we upgrade. I think I will pitch the idea of adding a new 2008 server then decommissioning the old one after the new one is tested and working. We are just wondering if there are any well known issues with Active Directory, like this and that dont work right if you have such and such running.

    Hello Kobskid,

As said before, basically the upgrade is easy. But if you have additional
server applications running, that can need additional steps before. That's
the reason for the questions and i think if others respond they have maybe
    some more different questions.

Also you have to check the running DC's before starting that they run correctly.
This you can do with "dcdiag /v", "netdiag /v" and if you have more then
one DC "repadmin /showrepl" from the command line without the quotes as a
first test to check for errors. These tools are on the 2003 installation
disk under support\tools\suptools.msi, just doubleclick it and install them
    on the DC's.

    Best regards
