Is it possible for a antivirus to heal a infected file

My dad gave me his laptop. He is not using it any more. He only wants me to backup some old files and keep it safe somewhere. I had kept that in a folder inside D drive. I had recently installed some games from torrent. Due to which the entire system is affected with virus. I was using a Avira here. There were constant virus warning when I ran the game keygen. To install the game I disabled the antivirus for some hours. But after that when I turned on the antivirus back there were hundreds of detection. It is almost a week now and the warning are constant. Now the D drive is having virus. When I open the drive I can see a folder inside the folder with same name. When I double click on that nothing happens. Right-now all folders are like that. I cannot find my files here. How to heal this files and copy them.

Your system is infected with serious Trojan virus. When you run AVIRA it will delete all the files which are infected. Before doing anything just arrange a usb drive. Copy everything in that and then run the scan. If the antivirus heals the folder then you might get the data or else it will just delete it. Atleast you can restore that back from the usb.

There is a manual process available to backup your data. Your system is infected with a serious virus and ample of antivirus will just delete the files blindly. I think Norton here can help you. I had gone through the same issue long ago. All the folders in my system were turned to a .exe file. When you sort them by Details you can see each of them are listed as application instead of File Folder. This is what the virus does. It converts all your File Folder to an exe file and when you double click on that, you are just running the virus again and again. When I got the issue I used different antivirus to get my data back. Among which Norton worked. When you run the scan, Norton gives you a choice to delete the file or to heal the file. When you click on heal it just restores it original position back. So that is the only quickest way I found to recover my data. It took some days for the antivirus to completely wipe out all the systems. There is one more thing you can do. If your system has some really important data you can create a rar archive of that. Many virus cannot corrupt a rar file. So that can assume that your data is safe. You can then simply move it to different location and format the drive which has virus. This is a very complicated virus and I do think this free antivirus can work on it. Just get a trail edition of Norton and test it.

I am having the same infection. I am having some photos and the folder is turned to exe file. When I double click on that nothing happens. My antivirus has first moved the folder to Quarantine. I restored it back. I do not want to loose the photos. Once I get my files I will format my pc.

I know one solution for that. The virus has simply turned the file type as a executable file. Now do this. In the address bar of Windows Explorer type the full location of place where your photos are. For example: D:\Photos and hit enter. The folder will open. Copy the files only. Do not copy any folder. In this way you can one by one copy all the files. The virus which you are talking about mostly hurts the file folder. It does not modify the files. So you just need to copy the files and keep them at some safe place. If you create new folder in your infected system, they will be also turned to exe files. Ample of antivirus when found this kind of infection then just delete everything. They just try to clean the system. The security software does not knows whether it has some kind of important data or not. So first one by one copy everything by adding the location in Windows Explorer and then you can move ahead with running a full system scan. I do not trust any antivirus on this. Because if you run the scan without backup and to clean the system it deletes the files, you will loose data here which is not recoverable.

Try System Restore. It is a temporary solution but effective. It will not clean the virus but will allow you to get your old working settings back. You can just run this and test back. I think that might fix the issue for sometime, atleast you can copy the data.

System Restore is useless here. When this kind of virus enters your system they disable System Restore. There is one option available by which you can get your data back. And it really works. For that you will have to download a LiveCD from web. There are ample of lightweight Linux Distro available by which you can copy the data and then simply format your system. There is no need to boot in Windows. You can download Ubuntu which is one of the most easy to use Linux OS. It has a simple UI. Download the iso file of that OS and burn it on a DVD. Then boot your system through the DVD. Instead of installing select Try Ubuntu. You will land on the Desktop. In that you have to go the disk where you had kept the files and copy it to some other location. The bootable disc here supports usb also. You can move your data in external storage. And do not copy folders here. Because they are already infected. Just copy the files. The best part of using a Linux Distro is that, Windows virus are useless on it. Once you get the data then simply format your system completely and then test back.
