0x8004ff01 Error When Installing MSE on XP SP3 Machine

I am running windows XP with SP3 on my thinkpad laptop. I am the only Admin of this system, and I must say that its completely virus free. Since yesterday I am trying to install Microsoft Security Essentials but every time it gets failed saying Error code 0x8004ff01.

So far I have tried installing it more than 6 times but the same result every time. I thought that there would be some problem with the windows installer itself, hence I downloaded the newest installer but yet not able to get MSE installed.

    Any idea or help?

I strongly doubt some other program is blocking the installation of MSE on your computer. Can I know which Antivirus program were you using before trying this? If you were using Norton or McAfee application you should have removed them using their removal tool that you can download from their official sites. This is because though you remove them, they use to leave some files or registry keys on your system that can be removed using the removal tool.

So first clean the computer and then try installing MSE, hopefully you wont be getting the problem again.

All you need to do is restart you computer and press F8 when the Bios screen comes up (first screen when booting)to bring up boot option menu then select " safe mode with command prompt " Next in the command prompt type " del c:\windows\system32\msiexec.exe " hit enter then restart the computer and run the windows installer (WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86). this is the only way I could fix it because a virus locked the file . good luck
