Apple confirmed on Wednesday the acquisition of the Beats brand, founded by Dr. Dre for $3 billion. The acquisition relates to headsets sold by Beats Electronics, as well as the online music service Beats Music.

Dr Dre became one of the first "billionaire hip-hop," as he had suggested - a bit tipsy - in a video posted on the Internet a few days there. Apple has indeed confirmed on Wednesday the acquisition of the company co-founded by rapper, Beats, for $3 billion. Dr. Dre and his sidekick, the famous producer Jimmy Iovine, will join the ranks of Apple around September, after approval of the U.S. antitrust transaction.

The acquisition concerns the branch of Beats Electronics, which manufactures headsets of the same name, as well as online music service subscription of Beats Music.

Tim Cook celebrates the announcement

"I have always been convinced that Beats had its place within Apple," says his sidekick Jimmy Iovine, renowned producer, which still claims to have worked on projects related to iTunes for the past eleven years. It was therefore logical that Apple will eventually redeem Beats, at a time when the consumption of digital music evolves from the purchase to the act of subscription logic.

"The acquisition of Beats will further improve our musical range, from the free streaming service of iTunes Radio subscription to a global service in Beats, and of course buying music from the iTunes Store that customers love to do for years," said Eddy Cue, vice-president in charge of online services at Apple.

Beats Music is still a very young service since it was launched in January in the United States. However, already counting 250,000 subscribers, said Jimmy Iovine.

A three billion dollars, Beats Electronics and Beats Music is one of the largest acquisitions in the history of Apple. The transaction is particularly lucrative for Beats shareholders. Earlier this year, it was estimated the Beats brand valued at approximately $1 billion, following a fundraiser conducted a few months earlier with the Carlyle.

Officially, the two branches of the Beats brand should continue their way in relative autonomy within their new owner. Apple, however, has not always been so tender with respect to these acquisitions in the field of music.
