Sony starts releasing HDMI 2.0 Firmware Update For Bravia X9 4K TV

Sony announced on Wednesday an update for the X9 series Ultra HD TV bringing in the full support of HDMI 2.0 input.

Sony brings support for HDMI 2.0 for its Ultra HD TVs through a simple firmware update without any hardware changes that are necessary.

With the exception of the Panasonic model, all Ultra HDTVs sold today were launched before the finalization of the HDMI 2.0 interface. Compared to previous HDMI 1.4, the latest version has the 4K refresh rate from 24 to 60 Hz. It paves the way for the active 3D video game and programs like HFR Ultra HD, which was previously impossible.

While most of the first Ultra HDTVs will stick to HDMI 1.4, only a few manufacturers have planned this upgrade. Meanwhile Sony offers a free upgrade that does not require any kind of download (firmware can be directly updated from the TV if it is connected to the Internet or using a USB key).

In return one of the four HDMI ports enjoy the upgrade, and it sticks to level B. Unlike the level A, it does not disseminate sub-sampling of Ultra HD at 50 or 60 Hz, which render color better as YUV 4:2:0.

The update is now available in Japan. No date has been communicated to the world, but the Ultra HD content at 60 frames/s has being absent than those at 30 frames/s, there is really no rush. Nevertheless consumers already interested in the Ultra HD has a new sustainable option.

Re: Sony starts releasing HDMI 2.0 Firmware Update For Bravia X9 4K TV

I have heard that the bigger 84" model Sony Bravia TV will need a hardware update and not a software update because there is no HDMI 2.0 chip available in this same TV. Does anyone know if this chip can be installed in this TV so that people who have bought this TV can also benefit with the new firmware update that comes with a whole lot of features.

Only the 55" and 65" X9 TVs will be getting this firmware update for free but Sony's 84" 4k TV wont get it because of the lack of hardware update. There are total 4 HDMI ports in the TV and only one out of this will be updated to HDMI 2.0, which is sad. With this new update the 4K TVs will get 4K signals at upto 60fps and 4K 3D signals as well. The old HDMI 1.4 usually supports 4K in upto 30fps only.
