Valve unveils Steam Controller replacing joystick with dual trackpads

The Steam controller already is designed to be used with a Steam Machine in the future, it does not have multidirectional sticks but comes with two trackpads. "The Steam controller is designed to work with all Steam games: past, present and future. Even the older titles can be used with this controller that simulates the presence of a keyboard and a mouse" explains Valve, who have already spoken on the page of the beta Steam Machines.

Valve believes that the Steam Controller offers "a new system of much higher order" when it comes to play PC games in the living room, and without a mouse or a keyboard. Designed to provide maximum accuracy on all types of games, Steam controller swaps the traditional sticks offered by all manufacturers of consoles with two circular trackpads, to act as clickable buttons. In the center, a touch screen allows you to configure functions related to different games offered on Steam: the FPS to RTS through the RPG, everything will be playable with the controller with minimal latency. In all, the device integrates 16 programmable buttons and a new force feedback system based on "small powerful electromagnets used in trackpads and capable of generating a variety of forces and vibrations" to control games more accurately with the frequency, amplitude and the movements on a traditional controller.

Valve has not only develop tools allowing players to create their own configurations used in the various games but the studio also hopes that it contributes to the development of the controller. Thus, 300 beta testers will be selected later this year as part of the Steam Machines project who will also receive a prototype joystick from Steam. They can make suggestions regarding the final form of the accessory: "We expect tools to be available to participants so that they can participate in the experience that is at the industrial design as electrical engineering" specifies the studio.

Remember that applications to participate in the beta will be open until October 25.

Valve has also added a haptic technology being dissatisfied with the vibration of the current controllers (asymmetrical weight that revolves around a single axis). This ability of haptic should give the player more information, such as speed limits, thresholds, consistency, confirmation of shares or any other event that game developers want to make. They can even play audio waveforms which can function as speakers.
