Download VLC Media Player For iOS devices on App Store
The open source software VLC media has resurfaced in the iOS App Store and now revolves around new technology bases.
Originally published in the Apple directory in September 2010, the VLC media player was designed by the French company Applidium. However, several developers pointed to violations of the GNU (General Public License). Indeed, the terms of the GPL contradicted the rules of usage of the App Store making use of the DRM.
In its 2.0 version, VLC code is distributed as open source. The application now rests not only on the GNU GPL 2 license but also on Mozilla Public License V2 allowing publication in the Apple directory.
Two years later, the team is back with a new version of VLC for holders of an iOS device. If the user interface is more or less similar to the previous, the application has a technical overhaul. Indeed, in addition to support for Retina displays, the team said to have built a new output modules for audio and video with support for video formats as comprehensive as the standard edition. Besides MP4 files type, it will be possible to read the MKV format.
Several new features are also introduced. Thus, the user will be able to load a video directly through a browser connected to the same Wi-Fi network which is also noted for the ability to download a file directly from a URL for offline access.
VLC 2.0 also offers sharing options with iTunes. This allows for example to read streaming stored in the iTunes library on the computer video. Finally, users find Dropbox integration for reading their stored online media.
MacStories specify that VLC can take advantage of hardware acceleration of iOS, since it is restricted to use MediaPlayer multimedia framework provided by Apple.
At the time of writing the application it was already listed in the American edition of the App Store and developers explained to have developed a French version that will be available soon. Meanwhile find more information here.
