At the opening keynote of the WWDC, Apple unveiled Mavericks, the new version of Mac OS X. No redesign of the interface is made which is similar as iOS 7, but many new and enhanced performance should appeal to power users.

No, the new OS X is not called Sea Lion, but now draws inspiration from the California geography, Mavericks is a well known spot for surfers.

Finder tabs and new multi-screen

Scheduled for the fall, the OS X version 10.9, called as Mavericks, does not revolutionize the system, but brings a number of enhancements and new features, including the targeting of power users, starting with the Finder. The File Manager of Mac OS X sees arrival of two innovations: the management tabs and adding tags to files for easier search. The Finder is added to the transition to full-screen applications manager.

Mavericks brings a new multi-screen management display that fills the gaps, which was very annoying in Lion and Mountain Lion. When using a full-screen application in the past, other displays simply become irrelevant! Apple has obviously seen its copy: it is now possible to display a full-screen application and keep other files, full screen display multiple applications on multiple displays, or display the menu bar and dock on several screens. Mission Control starts the page to facilitate the application of a screen for passing to the next, while the Apple TV via AirPlay Mirroring feature can be used as a secondary display, and only in copy mode.

Newest on the interface: notifications that enrich a few improvements, such as support for notifications from websites (news, warnings, etc) or display recent notifications missed in a day.

Maps and iBooks coming to Mac

As expected, in Mountain Lion, new synergies between iOS and Mac OS X, including the arrival of Siri has been implemented, but Mavericks do that really counts 2 and iBooks Maps. The electronic store books opens the Mac, with a drive that supports the "classics" books like enriched manuals made with iBooks Author. Maps side, not much to report from the possibility to prepare a route on Mac and send it to the iPhone. But the service has been much maligned, can it attract new users? It cannot be said for sure.

No new OS X without a new Safari and is an exception on Mavericks: the new version, in addition to performance improvements, mainly adds a new sidebar grouping favorites, playlist and novelty shared by your links called contact Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn, aggregated in a centralized view.

We did not expect frankly novelty on ... Trousseau, but Mavericks introduced iCloud Keychain, a bunch of synchronized access via iCloud, and based on a 256-bit encryption. iCloud syncs Keychain IDs, passwords, Wi-Fi and other credit card numbers between different Macs, like a One Password, functionality of the security suites such as Norton Identity or synchronization access via fire .Mac/MobileMe keychain.

New under the hood

Finally, Mavericks brings some new technologies, according to Apple, to preserve the autonomy and improve performance. The first is the Timer Coalescing, which includes low-level operations to enable the processor to increase idle periods. Apple evokes a decrease in activity up to 72%.

Similarly, technology frees the inactive RAM memory compression applications, while Nap App technology automatically lowers the resources of an application whose window is completely covered by others. On the same model, the priority of inactive tabs in Safari is automatically adjusted. On Safari finally functionality Flashblock type is added: nothing new for frequent extensions, since it simply disables the default content such as Flash banners, to enable the clicking.

It was predictable: OS X Mavericks will not come out this summer, as it was the case for Lion and Mountain Lion, but in the coming monther it will come, without elaborating. The price of the update has not been announced yet.
