Microsoft has decided to simplify its product lines by releasing the Windows Server 2012. The future version of its server operating system will be limited in four different editions, with pricing ranging from 425 to 4809 dollars per license.
With a dozen editions, the table summarizing the different possible options for the current Windows Server 2008 R2 is not remarkable for its clarity. For the upcoming Windows Server 2012, the final version should be launched commercially by the end of the year. Microsoft also chose to streamline its product lines.
The editor of Redmond posted a table that summarizes the four main editions of Windows Server 2012, called Foundation, Essentials, Standard and Datacenter. The first, whose price is not disclosed as it is targeted to OEMs, allow up to fifteen users for licensing.
Esssentials version is aimed at small businesses, with all administrative functions, with a limit of 25 users. $425 is posted to its catalog, however, it does not include rights dedicated to virtualization.
To take advantage, one must install the Standard and Datacenter editions, the first being limited to two instances per host, while the second allows an unlimited number of support for virtual machines. The pricing is then established based on the number of processors used, and the number of client access licenses (CAL). In so far, as the two editions are identical in functional terms, it will be for the client to determine which system with best pricing glue will be needed between Standard and Datacenter.
Windows Server 2012 is now proposed, for purposes of testing, as a Release Candidate. The final version should emerge in the course of summer.
