Mozilla Boot to Gecko renamed as Firefox OS

Mozilla's Boot to Gecko is now called Firefox OS. The foundation promises the arrival of the first devices in early 2013, and announces the opportunity for joining hands with new partners, such as the Chinese ZTE.

The Mozilla Foundation has finally decided to give up - in a not very explicit way - Boot to Gecko name, in favor of a much more recognizable brand: its future mobile operating system will be now renamed as Firefox OS. "The introduction of an open mobile operating system extends the mission of Mozilla," says Kovacks Gary, CEO of the foundation. "To the extent, that billions of users access for the first time to the Internet in the coming years, it is important to offer a compelling experience with a smartphone that anyone can use."

Therefore addressed primarily to first-time buyers, in 2013, Firefox OS smartphones will be equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor produced by TCL Communication Technology (branded Alcatel One Touch) and ZTE. The first devices would be launched at early 2013 in Brazil by the operator Telefonica, under its brand Vivo. Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia and Telenor have also expressed their support for the project.

Initially called Boot to Gecko, it was revealed in the summer of 2011 and at early 2012 detailed more widely, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Firefox OS is intended to run applications written using the common Web languages (HTML, CSS, JavaScript). The system, will be open source, that will present itself essentially as a runtime environment associated with Web APIs to exploit the hardware capabilities of the phone.

Re: Mozilla Boot to Gecko renamed as Firefox OS

The very slim Firefox OS will be based on Linux and there is really only one kernel, some drivers and a Web-rendering engine. So it is currently with 120 MB of memory. The entire front end is implemented in HTML 5, the dialer app and the SMS app will be displayed on the front screen with a battery status.
