Synology DiskStation DS411 NAS Server for quad-drive backup/media streaming launched
Synology today announced the "DiskStation DS411", a minor upgrade of its midrange storage server, the main reason for an annual update to take the field. For the naming of the manufacturer, the DS410 dated from 2010, could seem outdated. In practice, nothing distinguishes the new model of its predecessor.
On the sheet, the only novelty does not depend on a software upgrade is the RAM, which is the amount to 512 MB, but the standard move from DDR2 to DDR3.
We thus find the four drive bays in 2.5 or 3.5 inches, with support from those of 3 TB, a maximum capacity of 9 TB in RAID 5 mode in which it claimed in a Windows environment for a transfer rate of 105 MB/s read and 47 MB/s write. Unspecified processor clocked at 1.6 GHz appears to embrace the same.
The "DS411" focuses on power consumption, since it consumes only 29.7 watts and 11 watts responsible with hard drives in hibernation mode. A serious advantage over home made solutions from recovery and dedicated distributions.
Finally, it loads as standard firmware DiskStation Manager 3.1, providing an ergonomic interface management, but its predecessor can benefit from a simple update.
The "Synology DiskStation DS411" will be marketed as of today for the retail price of 380 euros. On paper, it seems to be an update pretext to bring coherence to the range in which there are only a few models in the "collection" 2010. This model is a good choice for a new owner, but it does not justify replacing a predecessor.
