Touted to be an iPhone killer, the high-end Nokia N96 16GB comes to India just before the official launch of the iPhone on 22 August.
Ahead of the launch of Apple's inconic brand iPhone, world's largest mobile phone maker Nokia on Tuesday unveiled its new converged device N96 under its 'N Series' stable.
The battle has started even before the iPhone 3G hits Indian shores, officially. And Nokia seems to be well prepared for that. It has sent its strongest player in the ring the Nokia N96 to give the toughest time to the iPhone 3G in India. While the iPhone will be available in 8GB and 16GB models, Nokia's 16GB high-end phone can be further expanded to 24GB through an external card.
Apple and Nokia have not yet announced the prices of their models, but according to industry sources, both phones having 3G enabled features, which allow high quality net surfing, video and music download etc, would be priced in the same range.
The price of iPhones would also have an Indian component as it would be offered by the service providers Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar.
While iPhone is likely to cost about Rs 31,000 for the 8 GB version, N96, which is expected to hit the Indian market by September, is likely to be priced above Rs 30,000.
About Nokia N96 Feature Nokia has been gracious enough to the Indian audience by providing plenty of Bollywood freebies. The N96 will come preloaded with the movie ‘Om Shanti Om’, 50 music videos, music tracks in Hindi and English and N-Gage games with an unlimited license on for the 3rd edition of Asphalt Urban. It will also have 3 country Nokia Maps that include Singapore, UAE and of course India and a 3 month Navigation license for 8 Indian cities.
"Our sales will not be affected by the launch of iPhone in the country...there are different segments of consumers whose needs are different," Nokia India Director-Marketing Devinder Kishore said in New Delhi.
With a large 2.8-inch screen display, the phone packs 16 GB of internal memory, expandable up to 24GB.
"The memory of N96 can store up to 18,000 songs, up to 20,000 images and up to 60 hours of video or 20 full length movies," Kishore said.
Though the phone would be available from September, consumers can pre-book the phone from across 2,000 Nokia outlets across the country from Wednesday.
