Boot folder, cannot remove, tried all tips.

I am not able to delete the boot folder? When I try to delete it then I get a message that bootmgr.exe.mui is in use. There is a file in the Windows XP root folder and 'bootmgr' is also not deleteable since it is being in use. I have already checked the registry but could not find anything. Then I used a software called Unlocker that is a tool for deleting the undeletable files but that too failed. I have also tried the recovery console, and then safe mode but nothing seems to be working. I have removed everything from Vista but I am not just able to delete the above things. Can anyone help me out with this problem. Thanks.

I think that it might be loading from the boot sector. Can you try to check the system drive by going into disk management and make sure that you have the proper boot files for Windows XP, that might be ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini. If these files are there then you can use the XP Recovery console to run fixboot. After that just make sure that the boot.ini file properly shows up in the location of the XP partition.

Thanks for the information, but I have already done what you have written in the post and everything is present and proper. I am able to boot up Windows XP normally and it is working without any issues but I am not able to delete the file or folder. After when I ran FIXBOOT then all Vista boot menus are gone now.

Did you try to take the posession of the files that you want to remove from the Windows XP system. All you need to do is just turn off simple file and sharing to get the rights.

I have followed that as well. I then tried to fixboot again but there was no change. I am going to check to get the ownershipt again even though I think that I have got everything right. Thanks for the replies, I will get back to you later.

Could you please tell us which operating system are you in when you are deleting the boot folder? You should note that BCD file located in the boot folder may be loaded in the Windows Vista registry that will keep a file handle open to the folder that you are trying to delete that might be HKLM\System\BCD00000000.

I have taken the ownership of the main folder and the subfolders and files but there is no change in the populated tree. I had to choose the lower box in the permissions tab "replace permission entries on all child objects...". Now, I will try to install again without it conflicting with the Windows XP parition. Thanks

If your Windows Vista bootloader has been damaged or corrupt in some way, you'll have to get it reset before you can use EasyBCD to configure a dual-boot. EasyBCD software proposes several options for setting the default operating system, to add additional entries to the boot menu and change their order, to restore the bootloader Vista, or even uninstall it to restore the Windows XP.
