Problem with drivers for HP PhotoSmart S20 # C5101A scanner

I have a Vista Home Premium operating system.

HP tells me there is no compatable driver to use between Vista and the above
scanner. Therefore buy a new scanner! Strange

    Any suggestions please

    Not much you can do....
    buy a new scanner....
or leave that scanner on your old XP computer.

It's not really strange at all. I don't know your particular scanner
or how old it is, but when a new operating system comes out, each
peripheral vendor decides for himself which existing products to write
    new drivers for.

It's primarily a matter of economics. If the scanner is a recent one
and still being sold, it's obviously in the vendor's interest to
provide the needed driver. The older the product, the less likely it
is that the vendor will write the driver. It just isn't worth it to
    him.

What version of Windows are you using it on at present, or have you been in the
past? If XP then get the latest versions from:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?
    os=228&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=59968&dlc=en

There's a main download and an update.

If you have any HP software that you have tried uninstall it using Remove
Programs and then disconnect the USB cable from the PC end and install the XP
    software as follows:

Locate the downloaded file ps804en.exe 1/1 (70.62M) on your computer, Right
Mouse Click on it and select Properties / Compatibility TAB.

On that TAB, check Use Compatibility mode and set it to XP with SP2 and also
check lower down the [x] Run as Administrator and OK your way out.

Do not connect the device until the installation procedure tells you to or
    until you get to Finish.

Then repeat the procedure on the downloaded update file ps803mu.exe 1/1
(373.11k) although you can leave the USB cable connected unless it tells you
    otherwise.

    Hopefully that might work .....

I'm using a very old HP SJ5P scanner in this fashion although it is scsi
    connected.

Using Windows 64. Have followed HUWYNGR suggestions, but when go to properties there is no "compatability" TAB. Unable to successfully complete installation. Have been using S20 on xp with no problem, but need to switch to the new computer.

Now using Vista 64. Have been using the Photosmart S20 Scanner on xp with no problem, but want to switch to the Vista 64. Have followed suggestions of HUWYNGR but when I got to the properties for the ps804 and ps803 downloads there was no "Compatability TAB". Unable to complete installation.
