UNABLE TO RELEASE & RENEW MY IP ADDRESS

    Hi

I currently have a dialup broadband connection, with the modem on a usb
    connection.
I am trying to release & renew my IP address, I have tryed ipconfig/release
& ipconfig/renew but get the following error:

"the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this
    operation"

I have tried this on & off line with the same error.

    Any help would be grate.

Re: UNABLE TO RELEASE & RENEW MY IP ADDRESS

The words "dialup" and "broadband" are usually used only in the context of "dialup is not broadband".

Do you mean DSL, which is a broadband over telephone wires? Or do you really mean dialup, in which a telephone modem (up to 56K) is used?

If you need to enter a telephone number to connect, or if one is entered once and saved, or from a pick-list, that is probably not DSL. Standard modems do not have IP addresses in the same way that DSL and cable modems do.

In a command prompt, try typing IPCONFIG /ALL. If you have a standard broadband connection, it should return something like:

    Windows IP Configuration

    Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : mypc
    Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :

Note that the braodband "modem" is listed under "ethernet adapter". Yours might say something about USB. But, the khe key is the IP address, which in this example is 24.4.61.146. If you have one it will vary, depending on your ISP.

Further, even if you have an IP address that can be listed as above, it does not mean that you can change it. Some ISPs assign semi-permanent address to their subscribers. At least they assign them for finite periods of time, as indicated by the last two lines about "lease". This is different from a normal dialup connection, in whihc the IP address can change each time you connect.

Re: Unable To Release & Renew My Ip Address

I don't have enough information to help you. Here's how we can get more
    information:

While you are connected online, open an elevated command prompt and type in

    ipconfig /all

Copy and paste the results back here. (Copying from the command prompt
is... rather unintuitive. Right click on the window, choose "Select All",
then right click again on the window. Nothing will happen on the second
right-click, but it should all be copied. Use paste normally.)

For your privacy, if you see strings of numbers in the output, feel free to
replace the last number in each string with "XXX". For example, 10.150.32.14
can be replaced with 10.150.32.XXX. (None of these numbers is really secret,
but it never hurts to be anonymous.)

Re: UNABLE TO RELEASE & RENEW MY IP ADDRESS

I suggest you have someone come to your house with a non Vista computer,
hook it up and try to do this. If that machine can't do it, then Vista is
    not going to do it.

A dial-up connection using a modem is not a cable or DSL connection using a
modem and a NIC (network interface card)/adapter.
