When attempting to add a new, network printer accessible via my Windows XP PC
on my Vista PC, I can browse and see the printer, however, when I attempt to
connect, I get the following error:

"Windows cannot connect to the printer Operation Could not be completed
(error 0x0000046A)"

Any help appreciated

So, one XP PC has a printer connected directly, and Printer sharing is
turned on (isn't it?). Another Vista computer tried to add a printer. You
see it in the networked printer list and you get the error. That right?
Have you loaded the printer driver on the Vista machine, using the Vista
print drivers?

The printer is a Ricoh CL 2000. I visited Ricoh and downloaded what they had
listed for Vista. I extracted the files, which generates instructions in a
browser window. The instructions seem like they were written for XP, since
they mention running the "Add a Printer Wizard" and specifying "Have Disk"
and then point to the folder where the drivers were extracted.

I tried this with the Vista "Add Printer" wizard. Now it doesn't see the
printer right off, I have to click the button to that allows "Search By
Name". I am able to browse to the XP machine and then see the printer.
However, clicking next results in the same error:

Windows cannot connect to the printer. Operation could not be completed
(error 0x0000046A)

The printer is on and shared on the network by other XP machines. I have
retested and it works over the network from any of the XP machines.

Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Ok, sounds a little strange that the XP instructions came up but that
wouldn't be the first time. This might be ok. The fact that the printer is
printing fro other computers is a good sign. Can you shut down your
firewall and AV software as a test for a short time in order to eliminate
them as a problem...on both (each end) computers? You did follow all the
instructions in the printer sharing help and support subjects, right?

The drivers were supposedly for XP & Vista....I have tried everything in
every networking "help" I could find, including installing the "Link-Layer
Topology Discovery Responder" protocol on the XP machine as recommended by
Microsoft.
No matter what I have tried, I end up with the same error message. I don;t
know what else to try.

What happened when you shut down down or removed your antiVirus software?

Thanks for your input.

I kept reading for the errors on the web and came across the articles on
adjusting the IRPStackSize in the registry. I have tried making the
adjustments (on both the Vista PC and the XP machines) but no go.

I have ESET anti-virus on both PCs. I have disabled it on both PCs. I have
also disabled the Windows firewalls on both PCs. No change.

The problem is however, bigger than just trying to access the shared
printer. Like the printing issue, when I attempt to browse files on the XP
machines from the Vista PC, I can see the XP machines on the network, but I
cannot access any files on the XP machines.

The opposite is NOT true- I CAN access files on the Vista PC from any of the
XP machines. The Vista PC connects to my NAS device and I can access files on
the NAS from the Vista PC, but it will NOT connect to the XP machines
(although it shows them on the network, as if they were available). When
attempting to access files, the error message says something different.
First the standard jargon about possibly not having permission to access the
XP PC, then, added below:

"Not enough server storage is available to process this command"

I researched that error, and the suggested solutions are similar to those
posted for the access to shared printing (killing anti-virus, IRPStackSize
adjustments, etc.). Nothing I have tried has changed the errors I get from
Vista- I am ready to tear some hair out.

If you have any other ideas, please let me know, and thanks for you input so
far!

this is a server service or network issue. Did you start by changing the
irp value to the largest and reboot? Or are you incrementing by 3, then
rebooting?

networking group would be the next place to go.

I fixed this!!! I tried this fix:

At first I set the IRP value to 15 and it did not work...then I change it to its maximum value of 50 and it worked!!!
