corrupted icon .... how to reset?

I have a corrupted icon, I delete it, create a new one, it's still
corrupted. I changed the video setting from 32 bit to 16 bit (and back
again), but that made no difference.

Under Windows 98 there was a utility that would rebuild your icons but I
    can't find that in Vista.

    Suggestions? Thanks, DH

what icon do you mean exactly? Perhaps you mean a thumbnail?

use the disk cleanup utility of vista, it has an option to clear out the
    thumbnail cache

Vern, thanks for the fast reply. No, it was actually an icon on my IE7
toolbar, a shortcut to a web page.

    I tried several things ...

I did a google search and tried a few things to begin with - changing the
display settings from 32 bit to 16 and then back again. Nothing.

I tried changing to a 'Classic Windows Appearance' (under Vista - right
click desktop, Personalize \ Window Color and Appearance) and changed it
    back to Aero. Nothing.

I downloaded and installed a freebie, TweakUI IV, but the free version
didn't have the option to rebuild my icon cache so I uninstalled it.

I go back to IE7, add the link\icon in question to my Favorites, and the
problem is now 'solved'. I have no idea why or how though.

    Hi Dave,

The icon cache (which is what previously was deleted and rebuilt) can be
    found under:

    C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local

You need to set folder options/view tab to see hidden and system files in
order to be able to see it. In XP, you simply deleted the iconcache.db file
and rebooted to take care of corrupted icons. I haven't tried it yet in
Vista. I would suggest creating a restore point prior to trying it.

that icon is a favicon, from a site if I am not mistaken?
for example google has the favicon as a G in a square... the yahoo site has
    a red Y

these are stored in the internet temporary files..

if you clear that, it will be cleared out and when you visit the site it
    will be downloaded again

Rick, I've already solved my problem though I don't know how.

I'll make a note of your suggestion for future use. Thanks!! DH
