Downgrading From Vista To Xp on toshiba satellite

Hello i currently am helping a friend re format his hard drive...It is a
toshiba satellite a135-s4656. It came with vista but got a virus or
something im not really sure and wouldnt log on anymore...so i brought
it home and put xp on because we didnt have a vista disk...and now the
onboard ethernet card is not finding a driver and im not sure about the
wi-fi card either...it has one network adapter that found a driver and
that is 1394 NET Adapter...im not sure which one this is..but next to
the Ethernet Controller it is just giving me the yellow question mark in
device manager...i was wondering if anyone knows how to get the drivers
for this network card to work with XP...any information is helpful...
    Thanks, Nathan

You'll have to check with Toshiba support for any
Windows XP drivers. It may be the computer was
only designed to work with Windows Vista and
    not Windows XP.

    See the following example:

Installing XP and finding drivers is pain in the neck even under the best of
circumstances. Now with new hardware primarily geared toward Vista it might
    be even more problematic.

There could be a couple possible adverse repercussions of which you
should be aware. First and foremost, if the specific computer model in
question was designed specifically for Vista, there may well be no
WinXP-specific device drivers available to make the computer's diverse
components work properly. Consult the computer's manufacturer about the
availability of device drivers. Secondly, removing an OEM-installed
operating system and replacing it with another will almost invariably
void any and all support agreements and, sometimes, even the warranty.
You would, at the very least, have to re-install Vista before getting
any support from the manufacturer. Again, consult the computer's
manufacturer for specifics. Thirdly, there may be the additional cost
involved in purchasing a WinXP license for this new computer.

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part
of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

    http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

    http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

Then, assuming you were successful in obtaining WinXP-specific
device drivers so that the computer can be made to work with WinXP, the
backed up data can be restored and applications (those that are
    WinXP-compatible, that is) re-installed.

Another reason why Ubuntu is another alternative when someone wants to get
rid of a beta "operating system" called Vista.

    Cheers.

It would only be problematic for an idiot like you.

Tosh has an XP fingerprint reader for that, and an XP software update,
so, with some sweat, it isn't flat-out impossible that XP would function.
Here's the Toshiba support gateway for the A135-S4656:
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...Model&x=65&y=5

It uses Intel's 943GML Express Chipset, which is in the 945GM family:
    http://www.intel.com/support/graphic...45gm/index.htm
You'll want their INF Update Utility, probably:
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/deta...12150&lang=eng

If you're adamant about avoiding Vista, Ubuntu might be less effort.

From Toshiba. I took a look at their site and don't see any hardware drivers
for XP/XP SP2 for that model. Didn't you check *before* you downgraded? If
this is a new computer and you want XP, restore the machine to factory
condition and then return it so you can buy another laptop that meets your
    needs.

If you can no longer return the machine, it looks like you're stuck with
Vista. If you'd like help with Vista, post the problems with all pertinent
    detail here.

I would stick with Vista on a strictly Vista computer, but you're not alone:
