chkdsk /f does not run at boot

Yupp, it does report that auotochk is corrupt, and it says it cannot
repair it. The Command line output is:

Hello,
So the log file is showing three files as corrupted.
tcpmon.ini
aero_link.cur
autochk.exe
You can use the resolution in this article to extract files from the DVD;
942968 Stop error when you try to download updates from Windows Update on a
computer that is running Windows Vista: "0x80070246"

The resolution in the article explains the steps for extracting files, the
rest of the article may not apply

I followed the instructions and installed Imagex throug the AIK. I
found the files, and managed to replace "aero_link.cur" and now that
file does not show up corrupt when I run sfc.

However, when trying to replace tcpmon.ini and autochk.exe, xcopy
returns "Access denied", and the files are not replaced. They can be
read from the image and written to a temp directory, but the system
files cannot be overwritten. I've already downloaded a drive utility
from my drive manufacturer to check my hard disk for errors and it
comes out as clean, so it is not a matter of getting the disk check
done. I guess these two files being corrupt is not the end of the
world, what would be interesting to know is how they got corrupted,
whether I should worry about malware or something else.

I expect that one next step might be to create a boot cd with console
access to the drive and copy the files from there. Perhaps another
day ...

Another thing I will do is to continue running sfc to see if other
files are getting corrupted.

It would have been great if sfc could mount the image from the CD and
replaced these files automatically, since a 900 MB download seems a
bit of an overkill to access a few files from a DVD.

Thanks Darrell for your help in this, if you have any further
suggestions I am all game, especially if it could help diagnose the
problem. If not, I guess I'll let it rest for a few days.

I, too, am having difficulty getting chkdsk /f to run at boot and I'm getting
very fustrated, because the suggested solutions seem to be way beyond my not
inconsiderable user abilities.

What I have is, seemingly, a single balky directory with corrupted files. I
would like to run Chkdsk /f, but it doestn't seem to want to run at startup.

Can someone give me a simple answer to this? One that won't cost me
Microsoft support money?

When I run Chkdsk, without the /f switch, it tells me this:

Hello,
If you have media, you can boot to the Repair option offered on the lower
left hand corner of the screen when booting to the DVD media.
Of you can follow the steps in this article where you need to take
ownership of the article

I finally got my problem resolved. Following is an excerpt of my
somewhat long and tortuous road towards resolution:

As mentioned above, scheduled disk check would not run

sfc showed that autochk.exe was corrupted, but could not fix it

I downloaded the AIK, installed it, and mounted the WIM file

When I tried to replace autochk.exe (and tcpmon.ini), I could not,
since the file was locked

I copied the file to a temporary location, and booted from the Windows
DVD

From the installation DVD, I started a command prompt, and used it to
copy the files

This worked, and after copying the files to their right places, sfc
stopped reporting errors

I scheduled a new disk check and this time it ran!

It reported a large number of indexing errors, but none that I saw in
the file and sector scan

Voila! End of the road! Case closed!
