    speakers not working

no sound coming from speakers, but sound coming from headphones.

using standard onboard sound on new intel board, new vista HP install.

the usual checks show sound is working, no problems in device mgr, no muted
    sound etc etc.

speakers are turned on, plugged in to correct sound port, and work on
    another system.

when i google "no sound vista" I see lots of queries come up on this subject.

Depends on the hardware and driver.
Check the manufacturer's website for new soondcard drivers for Vista.
Check settings to be sure the sound port is enabled and the card is the
    default device.
I have seen the headphone jack be set as default and the speakers won't
    work.

    RE: speakers not working

    Hi littleriver,

When you plug headphones/speakers into the front panel socket, the rear
panel socket is automatically disconnected. Sometimes you can get dust inside
the front panel sockets preventing them from working correctly. Try plugging
and unplugging your headphones a few times to see if that helps as it can
sometimes help to release a sticking mechanism in the jack socket. If that
doesn't work, then you need to check the connections on the motherboard. Make
sure that the front panel audio connectors are wired up correctly. To check
that your rear sockets are functioning correctly you will need 2 spare
jumpers. Refering to your motherboard manual, identify the front panel audio
header on your motherboard. Disconnect the wiring. Next, place one of the
jumpers so that it bridges connections 5-6 for the right channel and 9-10 for
the left channel. Note that for systems without a front panel audio connector
these connections will be bridged anyway. Again refer to your manual in case
these are different for your board, although these are the standard pin
layouts. Do you have sound through your speakers now? If you do then
reconnect the front panel audio connectors following the instructions in your
manual. If your sound disappears when you do this, then the front panel
itself is faulty. You can sometimes get replacement panels for your case,
although the easiest option would be to use a multi-function unit that fits
into either a spare floppy drive bay or a standard CD/DVD drive bay (with or
    without an adapter).

Unplug the headphones when you want sound to come from your speakers.

    sound cards? Wiring?

    Read the question please!

There is no sound card. And because it is onboard sound there is no "wiring"
    to configure.

Dust in the sockets? This is a new PC.

He is being serious. Those sounds cards usually have a ground that turns off
the speaker outputs when a device is plugged in to the headphone ports on
    the front.

    Re: speakers not working

Onboard or an add in card, the internal workings are the same.
Even without the headset being plugged in, I have seen the spring steel
piece inside the plug be either bent or broken and lock the sound out of any
    other port.
It is not likely, but possible.
If it is a brand new machine, call the seller's tech support line and have
    them fix it under warranty.
