cant open .wav files missing codec 22

I am facing a problem opening .wav files.
I am using a Toshiba Laptop with A135.
    OS is Vista.

The error message i get is "An audio codec is needed to play this file. To
determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web
Help." I am using media player 11.

I am also using a medical transcription software ie. Transcription Buddy
Player. In this software i get a error message The file *.wav has an
    unsupported wave format.

I am trying to convert the file in to a mp3 format with a converter there
also i get a error message as unsupported wave format.

Earlier I used to work with XP and there was no problem working with these
    files.

Ref Codec problem, do you click on Web Help, and if so do you find the codec
    you need?

What audio device do you have? Is it 16 bit or 24 bit?

Is the .wav file 16 bit? If it's 24 bit or 32 bit, it will not play in
Windows Media Player. Any player should be able to handle a 16 bit .wav
    file.

Ref Transcription Buddy, is this software compatible with Windows Vista? The
    manufacturers website should tell you.

What model Toshiba laptop do you own?

Is that the TrueSpeech Codec? If so, I had the same problem w/Vista and
went crazy trying to find the codec for it. I finally found it on some
obscure site. Let me know and if it is, I'll try and find the file or link
    for you.

Could you point me to a sample clip that shows this problem?

I suspect this is the PCMWAVEFORMAT issue here and may be a bug in how they
    encode the content... =\

The DSP Group TrueSpeech codec is not shipped with Windows Vista. It could
likely be reacquired from the DSP Group or the current rights holder if you
    need to install it.

I also have Transcription Buddy and have encountered the same problems when trying to play wave files. Windows Vista turned out not to include DSP TrueSpeech codec. To add this codec I:

    - went to a friend of mine who had XP, copied two files tssoft32.acm and tsd32.dll from his computer (they are usually located in either Windows\system32 or Windows\system folder, or you can try to find them in the Internet) and copied both to my Vista computer into Windows\system32 folder.

    - then made some changes to the Registry. For this opened Notepad, pasted the following text:

    ---
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]
    "msacm.tssoft32"="tssoft32.acm"
    ---

and saved the file with the extension .reg. Then double-clicked this REG file and answered "Yes" to update the Registry.

Transcription Buddy support gave me this solution and it worked for me.

On the above post, I followed the instructions which I checked twice but for some reason the registry wasn't being changed. I had to manually make the change.
To do so follow these steps:
    Open Regedit

    Navigate to the following key:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\
    Drivers32]

Click on "Edit" menu item and choose: "New", "String Value"

I named my new string the same as my XP string: "msacm.trspch"

I then set the value to: "tssoft32.acm"

This fixed the problem for our GearPlayer Ver. 4, Windows Media Player 11 and RealPlayer SP. As neither would play the transcription wav files.
