    Partition Magic

I am trying to partition my HD which has Vista Home basic in order to create
a install for Linux. On XP, I used Partition Magic which worked well,
however Vista will not allow this to run as it apparantly incompatible even
though this is an NTFS file system, the size of the HD is 120 GB and there
is currently 77 GB free. I don't think memory is an issue as I have 1300 MB
free. I think Linux has an EXT file format which was possible to create on
Partition Magic. The website for this program has no info on an upgrade for
Vista so I am wondering if anyone knows of a partitioning program that is
compatible with Vista or if it is recommended that you try a Linux
installation by using their partition program. I want to make sure that
there are no errors that could wipe out the contents of Vista and other than
installing on a 2nd drive, the safest bet might be to format first before
installing Linux. Any comments or suggestions appreciated.

IIRC, Symantec bought out PowerQuest (Partition Magic and Drive Image).
Support for Drive Image is marginal at best and the latest version (7) is
not compatible with Vista. Ghost V12 seems to be the current king of the
imaging crop. I just ordered a package from Fry's. All I wanted Partition
Magic V8 and Ghost V12. Fry's has a deal going that gives you Norton
Internet Security (gag), Partition Magic V8, and Ghost V12 for $70. Now get
this! There are two rebates good for $70 so The cost of the package is 0!
nada, nothing! I plan to sell the Internet Security junk on eBay so I will
net a gain - money in the bank. Can't get better than that.
*But* you better hurry over to Fry's because I think the deal might expire
    today.

But Partition Magic 8 is not compatible with Windows Vista.

Ah, but I'll be dual booting Vista Ultimate and XP Pro and PM8 *is*
compatible with XP is it not? The bottom line is I need Ghost 12. The Fry's
deal provides me with two apps + Ghost12 - FREE!

But if you create a partition for Vista, using Partition Magic 8, you "will"
have problems. Unfortunately, they may not show up until you have invested
many hours in building up your system. Then you will be forced to start
over, creating a Vista partition using either the Vista install program or
    another compatible utility.

I have created partitions using PM 8.05 and installed Vista on it. No
problems at all. 3 different machines.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with making this info available,
    because it's useful.
The fact that it is free makes it all the more attractive.
To pretend it has to cost something in order to be effective is totally
    unrealistic, if not impractical.
