And you probably won't with that program. It uses a very light search
for areas to "clean" compared to most. To check that out, run a few
others in analyze-only mode after using CCleaner, just to see what it
    didn't find.

Even the deepest of "cleaners" won't speed up your system, so neither
    will CCleaner.

With any such "cleaner", you do stand the chance of critically messing
up your system. You could use one a hundred times with no problem
(and no performance boost) but maybe after the 101st time you'll be
using another computer to access these groups asking for help.

If you plan to continue using a "cleaner", I hope you have a good
    backup strategy.

ALL - A L L - programs of that genre are worthless and using any of
them will increase the chances of you critically messing up your
    system.

Do as many searches of the 'net as you like, you will not find a
SINGLE website that will provide empirical evidence that such programs
will speed up a modern-day computer (post-XP). You will find NUMEROUS
sites where users are weeping and gnashing their teeth because of
problems such programs have caused them.

Normal - and regular - system maintenance is all that is required.

To be on the safe side, a wise user would put spend the money to buy
an external hard drive and use if for holding full backups of their
    system.

I currently have a half dozen full backups of mine - the most recent
not being older than a day - and I also have the first backup I made
the day I performed a clean install of Vista. Those backups are
stored on 1) an internal drive and 2) and external drive.

Heck, I still have the final backup I made of XP before I installed
    Vista.

Make that XP or later. Actually, I'd think it would be safe to say
    Win98 or later.

Today's systems have such fast processors/RAM/disks that any
"cleaning" of the registry would be imperceptible.

The hazards of using such "cleaners" or "optimizers" are too numerous
    to list.

Every single one of these Registry Tools are all snake oil remedies. Do not touch
the registry. Using any Reg Tool will NOT make your system faster or save space.
What they can do is make your computer unusable

Like *ANY* and *ALL* so-called regiastry "cleaners," it's pure snake
oil. It cannot possibly provide any benefit, and carries the potential
for causing harm. As there's *NO* benefit to be derived from it's use,
it' simply not worth the risk, no matter how small that risk might be.

I am a totally unknowledgeable newbie to Vista, which
    backup utility do you use?

Too bad people aren't always as informed. Even if they don't do
anything these products have a market and that's why they exist.

I use CCleaner also but not the registry portion of the program. I have
a problem when I use it though that it empties my recent programs list
on the start menu and after that it doesn't work anymore. I have to
apply a fix to get programs to show up on there again. I must have
something selected that I shouldn't. But that's no big deal, I only
run the program every 6 - 12 months.

Everyone here will say don't use any registry cleaner.

There are reasons. For one thing, it's not needed. For another, many
programs are not that accurate in their choices.

Agreed, avoid registry cleaners like the plague. They will nOT speed up
your system and they have a greater chance of messing up your computer
    so it will not work.

Re: Best Registry Cleaner for vista

The best registry cleaner for Vista is "None", as Gene correctly states
below and for the average user that is.
Tech guys will not look for advice on this subject here.
Therefore we can drop it completely.
Hopefully this will clear things up once and for all.
