    Windows update Error code 8000FFFF

I've recently been receiving the following error message in Vista:

Windows could not search for updates:

    Error code found 8000FFF

I've disabled all firewalls and still get this message. I have disabled all
spyware as well. I can't think of what the problem could be. Can someone
    help? Thanks.

I got the same error on a brand new laptop with Vista Premium installed.
by uninstalling preinstalled symentec antivirus package and reboot, the
    error goes away.

Did you reload Norton afterwards? If so, does the update now work?

If you hold down the CTRL key and turn the scroll wheel on your mouse on
your desktop you can enlarge or reduce the size on the icons at will.

Hi, just trying to figure this whole thing out...tried the search
regedit...but my computer come up with zip. Now, I have taken updates off
automatic, because when i shut down my computer, it would say
(forever....forever...)installing update one of one. This is not the only
update I have problems with. I can't seem to get apple's updates to work
    either. Any other ideas?

    Hi,

Not sure what you are referencing as you did not include any part of the
original thread you are responding to. Many regulars filter out older
threads, so few will know what you are talking about.

HKLM is shorthand (geek speak, if you will) for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and if
you don't have that branch in your registry you probably wouldn't even have
    a functioning machine.

For Windows Updates, there is free support here:

RE: Windows update Error code 8000FFFF

I have a fix for this issue. I am a computer technition and have seen it on a
lot of dell's with vista (especially ultimate). The typical problem is
missing / corrupt files in many cases this occurs at installition so a
restore is usually not helpful. This fix is for these cases where the problem
is occuring on new machines / fresh installations of vista. First manually
download & install, "Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable
Package" from microsoft. Then reinstall the windows installer package. In
some cases you may have to patch the framework with .net framework SP1. I
hope this helps some of you but i'm sure will not be a solution for all.
    Regards,
    Daryl

Re: Windows update Error code 8000FFFF

this particular issue does genuinely appear to be a software problem.
However there is some evidence to suggest its a hardware problem.
First, there are no articles about this issue on Microsoft's support
website, nor on Sony's website. If you ever encounter a problem and
cant see a tech-note that suggests that you are experiencing something
unique and it could be hardware.
When i was attempting to apply updates and install software, the
process was going super slow, at least 10x slower than normal. I went
into TasK Manager and showed processes from all users. 50% of the CPU
time is being consumed by a process called "Error Reporting Tool". It
is possible that some of the internal hardware is experincing some sort
of glitch and causing error logs to be generated.
The tech support people will always deny its a hardware problem until
the end since its much more expensive for them to replace hardware than
make you update software. Just because the tech says its not hardware,
    dont beleive them.
